Where do slices hide? SOLC 2015, 11 of 31

Where do slices hide?

Slices hide on drives to work
in the scenery that surrounds

Slices hide in phrases read
or phrases said

Slices hide in moments felt,
or experienced or viewed

Slices hide in wonderings and
ponderings and queries

Slices hide in memories and
recipes and old pieces of furniture.

Slices hide, waiting to be found
wanting to be acknowledged,
willing to be written.

This poem was inspired by a poem I wrote in 2001, called “Where do Poems Hide?” That poem was published in a book I wrote for Scholastic called Joyful Ways to Teach Young Children to Write Poetry.

Just as I am about to throw my hands up in surrender, your poem comes along and saves the day revealing the hiding places of slices. I love it! I especially like the idea of slices hiding in pieces of furniture – I am sitting on a wonderfully worn couch right now working on the Slice of Life challenge. Thank you!

You just have to know where to look to find that perfect slice of life. You nailed it with this poem. I hope this is seen by all those who think they are out of fresh ideas, you’ve opened a treasure chest.

You know where to go hunting…
That is most re-assuring. It seems the more keenly we observe, the easier it is to find those essential slices.
