SOLC 5 of 31: Puppy Thoughts

Last summer, I wrestled with the idea of getting a pet. Here is an attempt to write a poem that captures the deliberations between myself and my family.

We don’t need a pet.

                Oh but we DO!

We don’t have time for a pet.

                We’ll take care of it!

It will shed.

                We’ll get one that doesn’t.

                (We didn’t).

I don’t like when they lick you and jump on you.

                It won’t. We’ll train it.

                (He licks and jumps)

He can’t go on the couch.

                He won’t!

                (He does).

He can’t sleep on the beds.

                He won’t.

                (He tries).

He has to sleep in the crate.

               He will!

               (He did, for 6 months).

He’ll ruin the furniture.

               He won’t.

               (He did).

We really don’t need anything else to take care of.

               WE do!!!

(My son says, “he’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

I guess we needed him after all.

You definitely captured the “tug of war” feeling in this poem. I love how the last two lines just melt your heart and make all of the work in having a dog worthwhile.
