SOLC 9 of 31: On boys

I’ve spent the last few years at school focusing with my staff on supporting boy readers and writers. With some district folks we’ve done presentations for parents on Michael Gurian’s MINDS OF BOYS.

Last night I attended my son’s BLUE and GOLD cub scout ceremony. He is a Tiger Cub. The night was truly a celebration of parents and their boys and the FUN they have together. One parent put together some beautiful video montages of the past year’s events. It was filled with action scenes, noises and fun. Later in the evening the boys did skits – most of them had to do with a gentle toilet humor joke (such as passing a gas can from one to another, ‘what are you doing’ one asks, ‘passing gas!’). They boy audience LOVED IT!!!

I couldn’t help but think about how different the video and night might have been if a female had put it together. I’m sure it would have been beautiful, but I’m also pretty sure it wouldn’t have been the same – probably sappier.

I marveled at the way every part of the night was just about great experiences and great fun. Kudos to cub scouts!!!

My nephew is a scout and my brother is the local scout leader. I love going to his activities and celebrating the boy things! And yes, potty humor gets them every time!

Our school just did a Saturday book talk about boys… the book was called Boy Writers. I would highly suggest it if you havent already read/heard about it.

Read it. It was the foundation for our book study. Thanks for the suggestion!

I like that you’re focusing on what boys like to read with your staff. Boys can be tricky to match with books if they’re not interested in reading. Congrats to the Cub Scouts, too!

The differences between boys and girls… 🙂 I love that there is a place, some time, and the perfect ways to just celebrate the boys. How often we want to roll our eyes about the “passing gas” jokes, but turn it into a pun and it just seems so perfect. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
